When they identify a bug, they fix it quickly. When customers ask for a feature, they can evaluate it and ship it on a timeline measured in weeks, not fiscal years.
The customer experience difference is significant. Rather than submitting a support ticket into a void and waiting for a patch that might appear in the next major version (whenever that is), users of modern SaaS products often see their feedback reflected in product updates within weeks. The feedback loop is tighter, the product improves faster, and customers feel heard rather than trapped.
One underappreciated factor in any software buying decision is velocity — how fast is the product improving, and in which direction?
Legacy vendors, by their nature, are optimising for retention rather than innovation. Their sales motion is built around multi-year contracts, switching costs, and deeply embedded integrations that make leaving painful. They don't need to out-innovate competitors; they need to make leaving feel harder than staying. The product roadmap reflects this. Incremental updates, rebranded features, UI facelifts over genuine reimagining.
Modern challengers are playing a different game. Their survival depends on being genuinely better — not just marginally, but meaningfully. They're competing on product quality, on customer satisfaction, on the kind of word-of-mouth that comes from tools people actually enjoy using. Their trajectory, in the early and growth stages, tends to be steep. The product you're buying today is often measurably better than it was twelve months ago, and will likely be better still twelve months from now.
When you choose a modern SaaS product, you're not just buying its current feature set. You're buying into its momentum.
Switching software is painful. That much is true, and legacy vendors count on it. But the pain of switching is a one-time cost. The pain of staying — in licence fees that haven't been renegotiated in years, in productivity lost to clunky interfaces, in engineering time spent on workarounds, in frustrated employees who resent the tools they're forced to use — is ongoing, compounding, and easy to underestimate precisely because it's become background noise.
There's also the softer cost: talent. The best engineers, product managers, and operations professionals increasingly make career decisions based on the tools they'll be working with. Telling a talented hire that they'll be spending their days in a legacy system is, in some industries, enough to lose them to a competitor offering something better.
Modern SaaS products are often designed with the end user in mind in a way that enterprise software historically wasn't. When the user experience is genuinely good, productivity goes up, onboarding time goes down, and the humans doing the work are simply less miserable — which matters more than any ROI spreadsheet can capture.
The legacy enterprise software industry has spent decades making it very easy to keep paying and very hard to leave. That calculus served them well when the alternatives were thin and migration was genuinely difficult.
The alternatives are no longer thin. Modern SaaS challengers — built leaner, priced fairly, improving faster, and designed for the people who actually use them — exist across virtually every category of enterprise software. The question for any business reconsidering its software stack is no longer "is there anything better out there?"
It's "how much longer are we willing to pay the legacy tax?"
